The Decisions Firms
Actually Get Stuck On

Every comparison below is one we’ve had to work through in practice — either at Bay Legal or with a client deciding which way to go. These are our conclusions, with the reasoning shown so you can disagree with it.

A Note on Bias

Two kinds of comparison live here, and they deserve different levels of trust.

Platform comparisons — Clio against Smokeball, Lawmatics against Clio Grow — are ones where we don’t particularly care which you choose. We configure all of them. Our interest is that you pick the one that fits, because a firm on the wrong platform is a firm we can’t help much.

Comparisons that include us are obviously not neutral. We’ve tried to be fair about where the alternative is genuinely better, and in most cases there are real conditions under which it is. But read those with the appropriate discount.

Platform

Platform Comparisons

Clio vs Smokeball →

The practice management decision most small firms face. Smokeball’s document automation and Word integration are genuinely strong for transactional and document-heavy work. Clio is broader, more open, and integrates with more.

Clio vs MyCase →

Two mainstream platforms with substantial overlap. The differences that matter are billing depth, client portal behavior, and integration ecosystem.

Clio vs PracticePanther →

PracticePanther is automation-friendly and often cheaper. Whether that holds up depends on how complex your billing and matter structure get.

Lawmatics vs Clio Grow →

The intake question for firms already on Clio. Grow is included and adequate for straightforward intake. Lawmatics is substantially more powerful on automation, drip sequencing and attribution — and it’s a second subscription.

Lawmatics vs Go High Level →

Legal-specific CRM against a general-purpose marketing platform. GHL is more flexible and cheaper; Lawmatics understands consultations, conflicts and engagement letters without being taught.

Approach

Approach Comparisons

Remote Staff vs Hiring In-House →

The real cost comparison, including the parts firms leave out — recruiting, training time, benefits, payroll tax, and the cost of a hire that doesn’t work out.

XPRTS vs Legal Soft →

How our model differs from the larger law firm services providers, and the circumstances where their scale is the better answer.
